This can occur formally where students choose to commit to an extra-curricular program, or informally on a day-by-day basis where students choose whether or not to participate in more difficult work on that day.
Advantages
Students who choose to partake will be motivated to do so.

Disadvantages
Students may be reluctant to self-nominate due to a lack of acceptance from peers.
Mäori students may particularly be reluctant to self-nominate, due to the Mäori concept of whakama, which can be loosely translated as excessive modesty.
Some students may not be aware of their own strengths, as many gifted students can be quite harsh on themselves.
